SOLO SHOW : ON OUBLIE LE NOM DES FLEURS

Cohle Gallery is pleased to present On oublie le nom des fleurs, the first solo exhibition by French artist Matthieu Schaeffer, on view from November 26 to December 6, 2025.

In this debut body of work, Schaeffer continues his exploration of a reconstructed nature — one both observed and imagined. Over the past year, the artist has painted animals and plants encountered in Hossegor, Paris, during his travels, and within his own inner landscapes shaped by dreams and readings. Each subject appears as a smooth, shiny, and fragile form — halfway between natural essence and human-made material.

Through this interplay of the organic and the synthetic, Schaeffer questions our relationship to the living world in an era of simulation and reinvention. His works evoke a delicate equilibrium, where the boundary between reality and illusion fades, much like the fading memory of a flower’s name.

His creative process bridges the digital and the tangible: photographing, 3D modeling, experimenting with textures and colors, before translating them onto canvas with acrylic and airbrush. This transition from virtual to manual allows for images that are at once precise and dreamlike, evoking a reimagined garden suspended between worlds.

On oublie le nom des fleurs invites viewers to contemplate the fragile beauty of a reinvented nature — one that bears the marks of human touch while retaining its quiet mystery.

MATTHIEU SCHAEFFER

Born in 1998, Matthieu Schaeffer is a Paris-based artist who explores the tension between nature and artifice through hyperrealistic paintings of ceramic and plastic animals. Drawing from his upbringing in Kenya and Paris, he uses these objects as metaphors for ecological fragility. His precise style, influenced by his background in aerospace engineering, merges scientific precision with themes of memory, childhood, and dreams.
